LANSING, Mich., Nov. 5, 2026 — Members of the Detroit Caucus gathered today to hold leadership elections, following landmark midterm elections that culminated in another Democratic trifecta in Michigan. With newly elected lawmakers joining its ranks of returning members, the caucus will continue serving as a collective voice for the city in the legislative process.

“This is a pivotal time in our state and in the city of Detroit. Strong, courageous leadership matters and I am honored to have gained the trust of my colleagues to once again serve as chair of the Detroit Caucus,” said state Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus chair. “We are experiencing the dangerous policies from the White House through cuts to Medicaid and SNAP and exorbitant grocery and gasoline prices. Many residents don’t know how they will afford their medicine and where their next meal will come from. My colleagues and I are laser focused on policies to reverse these devastating decisions and usher in a better Detroit for all of us. I am especially grateful for the team of Detroiters assembled to lead the Detroit Caucus and value our collective voice for positive change over the next two years.”

“I am honored by the trust Detroiters have placed in me, and I remain committed to being a dependable voice for the people of Detroit. I am also incredibly proud to serve on this historic slate of Black women legislative leaders. Michigan is stronger when Detroit is stronger. I look forward to working collaboratively to lower costs, invest in our neighborhoods, and create greater opportunities for the next generation of Detroiters and Michiganders,” said state Rep. Tonya Myers Phillips (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus vice chair.

As one of the Legislature’s key regional caucuses, the Detroit Caucus plays an important role in elevating issues that directly affect Detroit families, neighborhoods, and businesses.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as secretary and support the work of the Detroit Caucus in the 104th Legislature,” said state Rep.-elect Candace Calloway (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus secretary. “It is important that our members stay informed and engaged as we work to advance the needs of the communities we represent. I look forward to helping strengthen our caucus.”

In the upcoming legislative term, the caucus will remain focused on working with legislative leadership and community stakeholders to advance meaningful solutions. Under Young’s continued leadership, the caucus is positioned to build on its work while addressing the evolving needs of Detroit residents.

“I’m excited to take on this responsibility and contribute to the continued growth and effectiveness of the Detroit Caucus,” said state Rep.-elect Kimberly Fisher (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus treasurer. “As treasurer, I look forward to helping ensure our resources are managed responsibly so we have the best opportunity to deepen our impact and deliver for Detroiters.”
