EGLE story map highlights the largest forest fire in Michigan’s history

MI Environment today is putting a spotlight on a recently released story map on the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, Michigan’s largest ever forest fire.

EGLE Classroom created the story map as part of updated lessons in the Michigan Environmental Education Curriculum Support (MEECS) Ecosystems and Biodiversity collection. The story map provides a Michigan-specific example of the kinds of disturbances that lead to ecological succession.

MEECS is a state-specific environmental education curriculum support program funded and managed by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to help students learn about Michigan’s economy and environment through project-based, data-oriented lessons in science and social studies.

The story map is housed in EGLE Classroom’s MI EnviroLearning Hub. It describes how conditions and human actions led to the Great Thumb Fire of 1881, the Red Cross’s first ever disaster response, and how the land and community recovered.
